Am I Enough?

The case of the month is an actual patient of The Turek Clinic.

He hailed from the Middle East. He cut a striking figure, in a Laurence Olivier kind of way. As a young doctor in his final years of training as a heart surgeon, he had issues with his “stuff.” Quite a few. Six to be exact, which he duly listed for me:

  • Small genitalia (compared to cousins)
  • Early ejaculation
  • Decreased ejaculatory force
  • Curved penis (not new)
  • Unequal lie of the testicles in scrotum
  • Lessening sexual desire

I sat him down to learn more. He was different. He finished high school at age 15 years, and medical school at age 23 years. At age 27, he is nearly finished with his surgical residency and will soon be a heart surgeon, easily 5-6 years earlier than the average American doctor. That’s a lot of hard work in a very few years. To boot, he had never been in a relationship with a woman, although he very much desired it.

Seeing Potential

After an exam, review of his medical records, a semen analysis and a good long talk, I addressed each of his concerns: “You know what? You’re absolutely normal, normal, normal, normal, normal and normal.”

“Really?” he asked innocently.

“Yup, ‘fraid so. Not sure how much thought you have given to your potential as a humble and accomplished man in this world, but my suggestion for you is to go forth with confidence! You are fully the man you desire to be.”

Realizing Potential

I guess he believed me. Several months later, he reconnected:

“Doc, I want you to come to my wedding in Bahrain at the end of the year.”

During this time, he had accepted a family proposal for an arranged marriage to a family friend whom he had known for years.

“Absolutely, my pleasure.” I responded. “I’ll be lecturing in your neck of the woods at that time and will do my best to attend your nuptials.”

And so it goes. Another blank canvas turning into a work of art. As James Grippando said: “A real man has no tougher judge than himself.”
