REQUEST FOR STUDY PARTICIPANTS

From:             Anthony Jerant, MD

Professor, Family and Community Medicine, UC Davis School of Medicine

Principal Investigator, MAPS Study

We are seeking for participation in a research study:

  • Men who have previously attempted suicide
  • Family members or loved ones of men who have previously attempted or died by suicide

We are developing a suicide prevention intervention, with funding from the National Center for Injury Control and Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); the UCD Behavioral Health Center of Excellence; and the UCD Department of Family and Community Medicine. The intervention is a personally tailored interactive computer program, designed for use in primary care offices immediately before a doctor visit. The tailored program  aims to encourage middle aged men (defined as those aged 35-64) who are experiencing thoughts of suicide to talk about the thoughts with the doctor during the visit and be receptive to offers of help and treatment.

If you are a man who previously attempted suicide: we invite you to participate in a one hour individual interview to discuss the tailored intervention.

If you are a family member or loved one of a man who attempted or died by suicide: we invite you to participate in a one hour individual interview OR discussion group (with up to 9 other family members/loved ones) to discuss the tailored intervention.

In the interview or discussion group, we will provide details of the planned intervention, and then ask what you think about it, such as what you like about it and what could be improved. For your convenience, we will offer a range of potential days and times to accomplish your interview or discussion group. Individual interviews can be conducted by telephone if you prefer. Your input would guide us in making further improvements to our intervention. The finalized version will be tested in a future randomized controlled trial.

If you are interested in participating, or have further questions, please contact Camille Cipri, the study manager, at cscipri@ucdavis.edu or (916) 734-2672.

We hope you will be willing to participate! Thank you for your consideration.
